Structures and Mechanisms - Final Task

We will soon be wrapping up our science unit on Structures and Mechanisms.  A final task will be building a structure out of cardboard that will consider all of the concepts we have learned. Should you have any cardboard boxes, paper towel/toilet paper cardboard please send in with your child in the next day or two. Construction will begin on Wednesday.  Thank you!

Collaborating with Ms. Nihmey's class

We worked together with Ms. Nihmey's class on Thursday on the following math problem:

Could someone be 10 000 hours old?

It was great to see students work together in small groups finding strategies to solve the problem.  Students discovered that someone can indeed be 10 000 hours old and they were able to justify their reasoning.

Guess the Musical Artist - Congratulations Mikayla!

Mikayla figured out that it is Enya who has been serenading us over the past few weeks.  Way to go Mikayla!  Who will our next artist(s) be?

Remembrance Day

Our grade 3 class was fortunate to have Caleb's dad come and speak to us on Remembrance Day.  He shared with us many details of his job and travels in the military.  The students asked some excellent questions and gained a better sense and appreciation for our troops and the work they do.  Thank you Mr. Clark!

Math

We have just finished up our studies in Patterning and Algebra and have moved on to Measurement (more specifically time and temperature).

Please take the opportunity to practice telling time with your child from an analogue clock.  The expectation in grade 3 is that they can read time using analogue clocks to the nearest five minutes.

We are also investigating the relationships between minutes and hours, hours and days, days and weeks, and weeks and years.

For temperature, we will identify benchmarks for freezing, cold, warm, hot and boiling temperatures as they relate to water and for cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures as they relate to air.

Homework

Homework initially due today can be handed in on Monday morning.  A number of our friends require more time to complete the math and language tasks.  As a result, homework will not be assigned tomorrow but on Monday and will be due on Thursday, November 17.  There will only be math assigned next week.

Science - Structures

We have been conducting experiments in Science class to determine how we can make a structure more stable.  Students worked with straws and masking tape to complete a series of experiments to see how much weight their structures could hold.

Class Music Artist Competition

During transition times in class we like to play music to maintain a calm environment.  Mrs. Sloan has enjoyed sharing some of her favourites artists and tunes with the class; so much so that we have turned it into a fun competition.  Students listen to the lyrics and are encouraged to go home and ask their parents if they are familiar with them.  Whoever can guess the artist first wins a prize.  We had two winners in our first "Guess the artist" game.  Congratulations to Desmond and Raeghan for successfully guessing Neil Diamond!!

Power Poppers Activity

We had candy in class last week!  We have been working on Descriptive Writing and one of our tasks was to eat Power Poppers and write about our yummy and flavourful experience. We are learning to use adjectives and similes to enhance our writing.  Stay tuned for our final product.

Working Together to Solve the Problem of the Week!

Swim to Survive!

Our students completed their third and final Swim to Survive lesson today.  What fun they had!  Once their final test was complete they were able to swing from the rope and fall into the water as well as have a soak in the hot tub.  A huge thank you to all of our parents who were able to volunteer their time at the pool the past three Tuesdays.

Homework and Problem of the Week

Just a reminder that homework sent home last week is due on Thursday, October 13.  The next round of homework will be assigned on Monday, October 17.

Sweet Possibilities

At Ahmed’s birthday party, his guests can build their own dessert. They start by choosing either a waffle cone, sugar cone, or a bowl. Then they choose from the following ice cream flavours: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and rocky road. Next they add either chocolate sauce or sprinkles. Finally, they can add a cherry on top if they wish. How many different dessert combinations are possible? Justify your answer.

Swim to Survive - Lesson 2 Tomorrow

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful long weekend.  Just a reminder that we have our second swimming lesson at Goulbourn Pool tomorrow afternoon.  Please make sure that your child has a swimsuit, towel, bag and change of clothes.  Thank you to our parents who have volunteered their time to help out!

Swim to Survive - Tuesday

Just a reminder that we are going to Goulbourn Recreation Complex for our first of three swimming lessons tomorrow afternoon.  Students should come to school with a bathing suit, towel and a bag to store their wet items in.  Thank you to parents who have offered to help out.  We have enough volunteers for tomorrow but I will be contacting parents who have offered their time for the October 11 and 18 dates.

Homework!!

Students received grey duotangs with their homework today.  It is due on Thursday, October 13.  We are working on writing detailed responses in complete sentences so please encourage your child to do this with the two EQAO questions.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Thank you!
