Monday, April 30, 2018.

Dear Parents,

The science unit that we are currently learning about at school is Strong and Stable Structures.  As part of this unit, students are asked to do a simple research project individually or with a partner at home over the next few weeks.  For this assignment, students are asked to research one famous structure that they will present to the class. Included in this month’s homework are four slides with ideas of famous structures that students may select from.  This research can be typed or written and placed on a large piece of bristle board.

On the back of this letter are some questions that should be addressed when researching.  Students should have a mix of written work and pictures to show and present to the class.  Students will receive an oral presentation mark for this assignment.  Students will also be assessed on how they are as audience members.  We will discuss oral presentations and what is expected here at school.  Students are welcome to use cue cards to guide them through their presentation.

Presentations will be during the week of May 22-25.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you!
Ms. Juneau and Mrs. Sloan

  1. Where can your structure be found?
  2. What purpose was it built for?
  3. What is it used for now?
  4. What city and country can your structure be found in?
  5. How big is your structure? What are its measurements?
  6. Is there a reason why your structure is shaped the way it is?
  7. When was your structure built?
  8. What is your structure famous for?
  9. Share some interesting facts about your structure.
  10. Is there any other information that you would like to share with your audience?
Good Luck!

Structures

We had fun trying to build the highest structure possible with marshmallows and spaghetti.  The grade 3's had so much fun collaborating with edible products!  In the end, the highest structure was almost a meter high before it collapsed.

App Project

We continue to collaborate with Ms. Juneau's class and Mr. Rowan's grade 11/12 class from Holy Trinity.  Teams have completed and submitted their artwork to the high school students for their games. They are now working on the questions that must be answered correctly in order to advance to further levels in their video games.  Each team has a theme and they are building their questions based on that theme.  Some examples include math, space and history and these are based on curriculum areas in grade three and four.

Kandinsky Art Project

Thank you to Lawson's mom, Tiffany for coming to our class today to lead our class art project.  Through great collaboration, we have created a beautiful piece of art.  Students are also creating  individual pieces to accompany our Kandinsky collaboration.  They will be on display in the school during Education Week.

Weekly Homework

Below is the note that was shared in the April Homework.  Please encourage your child to complete their homework each week!

We are about eight weeks away from EQAO testing so we have increased the number of homework questions each week during the month of April and the first few weeks of May.  Not only is this a great review before testing, these questions help to build on and reinforce the skills and content learned this year. Finally, this practice is also helping to  prepare our grade 3 friends for grade 4! We strongly recommend that students complete the math and writing tasks assigned.

Friday Fun!

We earned a pj reward this week and we came up with some great math problems using squares of chocolate.  Students created problems using different operations (x,+), fractions, creating fact families and in the end decided that there was a way to evenly divide the chocolate among twenty students.  My son Jack joined the grade three students for the fun and he was treated like a celebrity!

Good Friday Morning!  Just a quick reminder that students are invited to wear their pyjamas today as well as bring in a 'stuffy' and slippers.  Have a great day!
